A hydrogen network for Europe’s energy autonomy and competitive decarbonisation

The European Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to green hydrogen as an indispensable ally in achieving net zero by 2050. In its REPowerEU Plan, it has set a European consumption target of 20Mt of renewable hydrogen by 2030

Spanish hydrogen infrastructures will form part of Europe’s future hydrogen network, essential for meeting the European Union’s goals of decarbonisation, energy autonomy and competitiveness

Green hydrogen is making unstoppable progress across Europe. In the last year, most EU member states have taken key steps towards the development of this vector:

  • 17 Member States have already published their final Integrated National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) with electrolysis power targets (≈52 GW)
  • 48 infrastructure projects recognised as hydrogen PCIs.
  • 21,000 km of PCI hydrogen infrastructure.
  • ≈ €60 billion CAPEX in infrastructure.

Boosting a competitive, sustainable and resilient industry

The hydrogen backbone and its connections to Europe are positioned as an essential infrastructure to transform the industrial landscape by providing a 100% sustainable energy carrier for sectors that are difficult to decarbonise, such as intensive industry (heat, chemical and fertiliser industries, refineries and steel) and heavy transport.

Spanish industry already consumes 650,000 tonnes of grey hydrogen per year which will be replaced by renewable hydrogen, thus reducing its carbon footprint and improving its production processes while increasing its energy efficiency and competitiveness.

Thanks to the future network for the transport and storage of green hydrogen, companies in the industrial and mobility sectors will be able to access this resource efficiently and on a large scale, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability and national and international climate targets.

Enagás as Hydrogen Transmission Network Operator (HTNO)

With 50 years of history and experience in energy infrastructures, Enagás is the operator of the natural gas transmission networks (TSO) in Spain and Technical Manager of the Gas System. It has also been appointed by the Spanish Government as the provisional manager of Spain’s future hydrogen network (HTNO).

As part of its commitment to decarbonisation and its goal to be a Net Zero company by 2040, Enagás is playing a crucial role in promoting hydrogen infrastructures, developing strategic projects that will enable the integration of green hydrogen into the national and European energy system.

Since July 2024, Enagás Infraestructuras de Hidrógeno has been authorized by the Spanish Government to apply for permits, build, commission, operate, monitor and maintain hydrogen transport and storage infrastructures recognized as European PCIs.
